How to send food back politely in Italian
Mi scusi, la pasta è un po' fredda.
“Excuse me, the pasta is a bit cold.”
When: As soon as you touch the plate

The moment
Your pasta arrives lukewarm and your friend gets a dish nobody ordered. You need the waiter to sort both out, and you want to stay on good terms.
A2 · Unit 1 · Eating out
The lines
The un po' softener
Italians almost never say a dish is bad; they say it is a bit something. Mi scusi, la pasta è un po' fredda flags the problem without an accusation, and un po' is what keeps it friendly.
Mi scusi, la pasta è un po' fredda.
“Excuse me, the pasta is a bit cold.”
When to use it: As soon as you touch the plate
What you’ll hear back: Mi scusi, gliela faccio riscaldare subito. (I'm sorry, I'll have it heated up right away.)
This isn't what I ordered
For a wrong dish, name the mistake rather than the person: Scusi, questo non è quello che avevo ordinato. Then simply say what you did order.
Scusi, questo non è quello che avevo ordinato.
“Excuse me, this isn't what I ordered.”
When to use it: The moment the wrong plate lands
What you’ll hear back: Ha ragione, le porto subito quello giusto. (You're right, I'll bring you the right one straight away.)
