How to buy clothes in Japanese

The moment
You are in a clothes shop in Shibuya and you have found a jacket you like. You need it in your size and colour, and you want to try it on before you decide.

Asking for your size
Hold the item up and say 「これのMサイズはありますか。」 to ask if they have it in medium. Swap M for S or L and it works for any size.
これのMサイズはありますか。

When to use it: Item in hand, speaking to shop staff
What you’ll hear back: はい、少々お待ちください。 hai, shōshō omachi kudasai. (Yes, one moment please.)
Asking to try it on
Say 「試着してもいいですか。」 to ask to try something on. Staff will hand you a numbered tag and point you to the fitting room.
試着してもいいですか。
shichaku shite mo ii desu ka.
“May I try it on?”
When to use it: Before going into the fitting room
What you’ll hear back: はい、試着室はあちらです。 hai, shichakushitsu wa achira desu. (Yes, the fitting room is over there.)

大きい means big, and ちょっと keeps it polite and soft.
