How to take a taxi in Japanese

The moment
You climb into a taxi outside your Tokyo hotel and need to reach Tokyo Station before your train. You want a rough fare first, then to be dropped at the right corner and pay.

The lines
Just say where you are going
The driver expects your destination and nothing else: 「東京駅までお願いします。」 Any place name plus まで plus お願いします and you sound completely normal.

When to use it: The moment you sit down in the taxi
What you’ll hear back: かしこまりました。 kashikomarimashita. (Certainly.)
Asking the rough fare
Before you set off, ask 「だいたいいくらぐらいかかりますか。」 to get a ballpark figure. だいたい and ぐらい tell the driver you only want an estimate, not a promise.
だいたいいくらぐらいかかりますか。
daitai ikura gurai kakarimasu ka.
“Roughly how much will it cost?”
When to use it: Before the driver pulls away from the curb
What you’ll hear back: そうですね、三千円ぐらいですね。 sō desu ne, sanzen en gurai desu ne. (Let's see, around 3,000 yen.)
