The lines

Answering honestly

"La verdad es que..." warns that a real answer is coming, and estar de bajón is how Spaniards say they feel low: "La verdad es que estoy un poco de bajón últimamente."

La verdad es que estoy un poco de bajón últimamente.

“The truth is I've been feeling a bit low lately.”

When to use it: When bien would be a lie

What you’ll hear back: Vaya, ¿y eso? ¿Qué te pasa? (Oh no, how come? What's up?)

Asking how they really are

When you know something is going on, skip ¿qué tal? and ask how they are coping: "Oye, ¿y tú cómo lo llevas?" It invites a real answer instead of a polite bien.

Oye, ¿y tú cómo lo llevas?

“Hey, and how are you coping?”

When to use it: To a friend going through something hard

What you’ll hear back: Pues regular, la verdad. (Not great, honestly.)
