The lines

The 'es que' softener

'Es que' turns a complaint into an explanation: 'Perdone, es que esto está un poco frío.' In a casual bar you can say 'Perdona' and switch to tú.

Perdone, es que esto está un poco frío.

“Excuse me, this is a little cold.”

When to use it: The moment you notice something is wrong

What you’ll hear back: Ay, perdone, ahora mismo se lo cambio. (Sorry, I'll change it right away.)

Wrong dish, no blame

Open with 'creo que' so nobody is accused: 'Creo que esto no es lo que he pedido.' Then say what you actually ordered.

Creo que esto no es lo que he pedido.

“I think this isn't what I ordered.”

When to use it: When the wrong plate lands in front of you

What you’ll hear back: ¿Qué había pedido usted? (What had you ordered?)
