Duets: practice with a friend

A duet is a conversation with a friend who speaks the language you are learning. If they are learning your language, you take turns: ten minutes in each language, up to 30 minutes together. If your friend just helps, you both speak the language you are learning the whole time. Duets are free and use no practice time.

Before your first duet you see this notice: "You’ll be talking with the person who invited you. Linguino doesn’t record duets. Leave or report at any time."

Invite a friend

  • Open Duets in your account menu (the round button with your initial, top right).
  • Choose the language you learn, the language your friend learns (or "My friend just helps") and your level, then "Create duet".
  • Copy the invite link and send it to your friend yourself. They sign in with their email, see who invited them and the same notice, and join. Only the two of you can be in a duet.
  • An invitation lasts 7 days, and you can have up to 3 open duets at once.

In the room

  • Hold the button to speak, or turn on "Tap to start and stop". Your friend hears you only while your microphone is on.
  • A topic card gives you something to talk about, with starter lines in the language you are speaking. "Next topic" moves you both to the next card.
  • "Hint, just for me" suggests what you could say next, to you alone, once every 10 seconds.
  • When you both learn a language, it switches by itself after ten minutes, or choose "Switch language" sooner. After 30 minutes together, the duet ends.

Leave, end or report

  • "Leave room" takes you out. You can both come back until the duet ends or its invitation runs out.
  • On the Duets page, "End duet" ends it for both of you.
  • "Report a problem" ends the duet for both of you right away. We keep your reason and both accounts so we can review what happened; your friend does not see your reason.

What we keep

Duets are not recorded or transcribed. While your microphone is on, your voice goes through our server to your friend, and none of it is stored. Topic cards and hints are written by AI from the duet’s languages, level and topic, never from what either of you said. Each of you sees the other’s email address.
