B1 · Unit 2 · Stories & feelings

The lines

À ta place + conditional

« À ta place » plus a conditional verb is the French « if I were you ». « Moi, à ta place, j'attendrais un peu avant de prendre une décision » hands over an opinion instead of an order.

Moi, à ta place, j'attendrais un peu avant de prendre une décision

“If I were you, I'd wait a bit before making a decision”

When to use it: Giving your real opinion on their problem

What you’ll hear back: Tu as peut-être raison, je vais y réfléchir. (You might be right, I'll think about it.)

Advice disguised as a question

Turn a suggestion into a question with « t'as essayé de » plus an infinitive. « T'as essayé de lui en parler calmement ? » proposes the solution while leaving them the last word.

T'as essayé de lui en parler calmement ?

“Have you tried talking to them about it calmly?”

When to use it: Suggesting something they may not have tried yet

What you’ll hear back: Non, j'ose pas trop, en fait. (No, I don't really dare, to be honest.)
