“I understand, it must be really hard to go through”
When: The moment they finish telling you what happened

The moment
A close French friend has been quiet for weeks and finally agrees to meet you at a café. You get them to open up, listen to the whole story, share something similar that happened to you, and give them advice they can actually use.
B1 · Unit 2 · Stories & feelings · Checkpoint
This is the unit’s checkpoint: one roleplay that puts the unit’s scenes together.
The lines
Empathy before advice
Nobody accepts advice from someone who has not shown they understood. « Je comprends, ça doit être vraiment dur à vivre » is the line that earns you the right to suggest anything at all.
“I understand, it must be really hard to go through”
When to use it: The moment they finish telling you what happened
What you’ll hear back: Merci, t'es le seul à qui j'en parle. (Thanks, you're the only one I talk to about this.)
Advise in the conditional
Once they have talked, offer your view without pushing: « Moi, à ta place, je prendrais quelques jours pour y voir plus clair ». The conditional keeps it an opinion rather than an instruction.
“If I were you, I'd take a few days to see things more clearly”
When to use it: Closing the conversation with your honest opinion
What you’ll hear back: Ouais, t'as sans doute raison. (Yeah, you're probably right.)
Words for this scene
| French | Say it | English |
|---|---|---|
| Qu'est-ce qui t'arrive ? | kess kee tah-REEV | What's going on with you? |
You haven't said a word for a while — what's going on with you? Tip: Ask it softly; asked too fast it sounds like an interrogation. | ||
| Et là, d'un coup | eh LAH, duhn KOO | And then, all of a sudden |
And then, all of a sudden, she told me she was leaving. Tip: Use it when you tell your own story back to them. | ||
| Tu devrais peut-être | tew duh-VREH puh-TETR | Maybe you should |
Maybe you should take a few days to catch your breath. Tip: Keep « peut-être » — without it, friends hear a lecture. | ||
