This is the unit’s checkpoint: one roleplay that puts the unit’s scenes together.

The lines

Placing your order

Name your dish with « Je vais prendre le plat du jour » and the server will come straight back at you about your drink. Have an answer ready.

Je vais prendre le plat du jour

“I'll have the dish of the day”

When to use it: The moment the server arrives with the notepad

What you’ll hear back: Et comme boisson ? (And to drink?)

Checking the dish first

Before you commit, point and ask « Il y a quoi dedans ? » — the shorter, more spoken version of qu'est-ce qu'il y a dedans. It is the one question that saves you from cream, lardons or onions.

Il y a quoi dedans ?

“What's in it?”

When to use it: While you still have the menu in hand

What you’ll hear back: Il y a du poisson et des pommes de terre. (There's fish and potatoes.)
