The lines

Asking what is in it

Point at the dish and ask « Qu'est-ce qu'il y a dedans ? » — what's in it? « Dedans » means in it, so the same short question works for a salad, a sauce or a sandwich.

Qu'est-ce qu'il y a dedans ?

“What's in it?”

When to use it: Pointing at a dish you don't recognise

What you’ll hear back: Il y a du poulet, de la crème et des champignons. (There's chicken, cream and mushrooms.)

Saying what you can't eat

« Je ne peux pas manger de porc » means I can't eat pork. Swap the food at the end — de gluten, de poisson, de fromage — and the rest stays exactly the same.

Je ne peux pas manger de porc

“I can't eat pork”

When to use it: As you order, or before you choose

What you’ll hear back: D'accord, je le signale en cuisine. (Okay, I'll tell the kitchen.)
