The lines

Claiming the room you booked

However badly the journey went, the desk conversation starts the same way: 'Ho una prenotazione a nome Rossi per due notti.' Say it before anything else, with your passport already in hand.

Ho una prenotazione a nome Rossi per due notti.

“I have a booking under the name Rossi for two nights.”

When to use it: Opening line at any reception desk

What you’ll hear back: Un attimo, non trovo la prenotazione nel sistema. (One moment, I cannot find the booking in the system.)

Explaining the disaster

Two past events joined by 'e' explain everything: 'Il treno è arrivato in ritardo e ho perso la coincidenza.' Note the two auxiliaries: 'arrivare' takes 'essere', 'perdere' takes 'avere'.

Il treno è arrivato in ritardo e ho perso la coincidenza.

“The train arrived late and I missed my connection.”

When to use it: Explaining why you turn up hours late

What you’ll hear back: Capisco, purtroppo tenevamo la camera solo fino alle undici. (I see, unfortunately we only held the room until eleven.)
