The lines
Say what you booked
Open with the booking itself, in the past: 'Ho prenotato una camera doppia per due notti.' Italians count hotel stays in nights, and 'prenotare' takes 'avere' in the passato prossimo.
Ho prenotato una camera doppia per due notti.
“I booked a double room for two nights.”
When to use it: Your first line at the reception desk
What you’ll hear back: Benissimo, mi può dare un documento? (Very good, can you give me an ID?)
Problem first, then the fix
Name what is broken with 'non funziona', then ask for the solution in the same breath: 'L'aria condizionata non funziona, è possibile cambiare camera?' The impersonal 'è possibile' asks the hotel without blaming the person in front of you.
L'aria condizionata non funziona, è possibile cambiare camera?
“The air conditioning doesn't work, is it possible to change rooms?”
When to use it: Back at the desk after finding a problem upstairs
What you’ll hear back: Mi dispiace, le do subito un'altra camera. (I am sorry, I will give you another room right away.)
