“I really understand, it must be a difficult time.”
When: The moment they finish telling you what happened

The moment
A close Italian friend has been strangely quiet for weeks and finally agrees to meet you for an aperitivo in Trastevere. You get them to open up, listen to the whole story, tell them about a time something similar happened to you, and leave them with advice they can actually use.
B1 · Unit 2 · Stories & feelings · Checkpoint
This is the unit’s checkpoint: one roleplay that puts the unit’s scenes together.
The lines
Empathy before advice
Nobody accepts advice from someone who has not shown they understood first. "Ti capisco benissimo, dev'essere un periodo difficile" is the line that earns you the right to suggest anything at all.
“I really understand, it must be a difficult time.”
When to use it: The moment they finish telling you what happened
What you’ll hear back: Grazie, sei l'unico con cui riesco a parlarne. (Thanks, you're the only one I can talk to about it.)
Advise in the conditional
Once they have talked, offer your view without pushing: "Se fossi in te, ne parlerei con lui prima di decidere". The conditional keeps it an opinion rather than an instruction.
“If I were you, I'd talk to him about it before deciding.”
When to use it: Closing the conversation with your honest opinion
What you’ll hear back: Sì, forse hai ragione tu. (Yeah, maybe you're right.)
Words for this scene
| Italian | Say it | English |
|---|---|---|
| Come stai davvero? | KOH-meh STAH-ee dahv-VEH-roh | How are you really? |
You haven't said a word for half an hour: how are you really? Tip: Lower your voice and slow down, or it sounds like pressure. | ||
| a un certo punto | ah oon CHEHR-toh POON-toh | at one point, then all of a sudden |
It happened to me too: at one point I dropped everything. Tip: Use it when you tell your own story back to them. | ||
| ti conviene | tee kon-VYEH-neh | you'd be better off, it's worth your while |
Secondo me ti conviene dormirci sopra, fidati. I think you'd be better off sleeping on it, trust me. Tip: Add "fidati" to soften it into friendly advice. | ||
