The moment

Your home internet in Bologna has been dead for three days and you work from home. You call the provider, get through the automated menu, explain the fault, push back when they blame your router, and do not hang up until you have a technician slot and a reference number.

B1 · Unit 3 · Practical adulting · Checkpoint

This is the unit’s checkpoint: one roleplay that puts the unit’s scenes together.

The lines

The problem and how long it has lasted

Open with the reason and the duration together: 'Buongiorno, chiamo per un problema con la linea internet: da tre giorni non funziona.' Italian uses 'da' plus a time span with the present tense for something still going on.

Buongiorno, chiamo per un problema con la linea internet: da tre giorni non funziona.

“Good morning, I'm calling about a problem with my internet line: it hasn't worked for three days.”

When to use it: Your first sentence to the agent

What you’ll hear back: Mi conferma il codice cliente, per favore? (Can you confirm your customer number, please?)

Pushing back on a useless answer

Acknowledge, then hold your ground: 'Capisco, ma ho già riavviato il modem tre volte: preferirei fissare l'intervento di un tecnico.' 'Capisco, ma' plus the conditional refuses the script without starting a fight.

Capisco, ma ho già riavviato il modem tre volte: preferirei fissare l'intervento di un tecnico.

“I understand, but I've already restarted the modem three times: I'd rather book a technician visit.”

When to use it: When they tell you to unplug it and wait

What you’ll hear back: Va bene, verifico la disponibilità dei tecnici. (All right, I will check technician availability.)
