The lines

When you bought it, what it does now

Lead with the timeline and the fault in one sentence: 'L'ho comprata tre settimane fa e ha già smesso di funzionare.' 'Smettere di' plus the infinitive is how Italians say something stopped working.

L'ho comprata tre settimane fa e ha già smesso di funzionare.

“I bought it three weeks ago and it has already stopped working.”

When to use it: Your opening line at the shop counter

What you’ll hear back: Ha lo scontrino con sé? (Do you have the receipt with you?)

Ranking what you want

Say which remedy you prefer instead of demanding one: 'Più che la riparazione, preferirei la sostituzione o il rimborso.' The conditional 'preferirei' keeps you firm but polite.

Più che la riparazione, preferirei la sostituzione o il rimborso.

“Rather than a repair, I'd prefer a replacement or a refund.”

When to use it: When they offer to send it away for repair

What you’ll hear back: La nostra politica prevede prima la riparazione. (Our policy is repair first.)
