The lines

Background versus event

Italian narrates on two tracks: "stavo" plus the gerund paints what was already going on, and the passato prossimo drops the thing that happened. "Stavo aspettando l'autobus quando all'improvviso è scoppiato un temporale" puts both in one breath.

Stavo aspettando l'autobus quando all'improvviso è scoppiato un temporale.

“I was waiting for the bus when suddenly a storm broke out.”

When to use it: Opening the story, right before the twist

What you’ll hear back: E poi? Che hai fatto? (And then? What did you do?)

Frame it: all'inizio, alla fine

Bookend the story with "all'inizio" for how it started and "alla fine" for where it landed. "All'inizio mi sono preso un bello spavento, ma alla fine è andato tutto bene" gives your listener the shape of the whole thing in one sentence.

All'inizio mi sono preso un bello spavento, ma alla fine è andato tutto bene.

“At first I got quite a scare, but in the end it all turned out fine.”

When to use it: Wrapping up, with the moral of the story

What you’ll hear back: Meno male! Mi hai fatto stare in ansia. (Thank goodness! You had me worried.)
