How to return an item in Japanese
これを返品したいんですが。

When: At the counter, item on the desk
The moment
You are back at the same Shibuya shop the next day because the jacket you bought is not right. You have the receipt and you want an exchange.

The lines
Opening a return
Put the item on the counter and say 「これを返品したいんですが。」 The soft 「んですが」 at the end turns it into a polite request rather than a demand.
これを返品したいんですが。

When to use it: At the counter, item on the desk
What you’ll hear back: レシートはお持ちですか。 reshīto wa o-mochi desu ka. (Do you have the receipt?)
Exchange or refund
「交換できますか。」 asks them to swap the item for another one. If you want your money back instead, say 「返金できますか。」
交換できますか。
kōkan dekimasu ka.
“Can I exchange it?”
When to use it: After explaining the problem
What you’ll hear back: はい、お取り替えいたします。 hai, o-torikae itashimasu. (Yes, we'll exchange it for you.)
