“Actually, something unbelievable happened the other day.”
When: Launching into a story over drinks

The lines
Opening with 実は
Japanese storytellers hook you before they start: 「実は、この前とんでもないことがあったんですよ。」 The 〜んですよ ending promises background you are about to explain, so your listener settles in and asks for more.
実は、この前とんでもないことがあったんですよ。
jitsu wa, kono mae tondemonai koto ga atta n desu yo.
“Actually, something unbelievable happened the other day.”
When to use it: Launching into a story over drinks
What you’ll hear back: えっ、何があったんですか。 eh, nani ga atta n desu ka. (What? What happened?)
Background, then the twist
Hold the scene open with 〜ていたら, then drop the event with 急に: 「駅で電車を待っていたら、急に停電になったんです。」 The 〜ていたら half is what was going on; the past half is the thing that actually happened.
駅で電車を待っていたら、急に停電になったんです。
eki de densha o matte itara, kyū ni teiden ni natta n desu.
“I was waiting for a train at the station when suddenly the power went out.”
When to use it: The moment your story turns
What you’ll hear back: えー、それでどうしたんですか。 ē, sore de dō shita n desu ka. (Whoa, so what did you do?)
