A1 · Unit 2 · Café & food
The lines
Ordering politely
In Spain you order with "me pones" or "quería" — literally "you put me" / "I wanted". It sounds softer than a direct demand.
Me pones un café con leche, por favor
“Can I get a coffee with milk, please.”
When to use it: Saying your order at the counter
What you’ll hear back: ¿Algo más? (Anything else?)
Asking to pay
When you finish, catch the waiter with "me cobras" — "charge me". It is the everyday way to ask for the bill at a counter.
¿Me cobras, por favor?
“Can I pay, please?”
When to use it: When you are ready to pay
What you’ll hear back: Claro, son tres euros.
