How to talk about holidays and traditions in Spanish
¿Y aquí cómo se celebra la Nochevieja?
“And how do people celebrate New Year's Eve here?”
When: When a local holiday comes up

The moment
Your flatmate in Madrid is telling you about the fiesta happening this weekend in the barrio. You want to ask how it is actually celebrated, explain the closest thing back home, and compare the two.

The lines
Asking how it is done here
The impersonal se is the key to asking about any custom: "¿Y aquí cómo se celebra la Nochevieja?" Swap Nochevieja for any fiesta and the question still works.
¿Y aquí cómo se celebra la Nochevieja?
“And how do people celebrate New Year's Eve here?”
When to use it: When a local holiday comes up
What you’ll hear back: Pues con las doce uvas, cena en familia y luego a salir. (Well, with the twelve grapes, dinner with family and then out.)
Explaining what your lot usually do
Soler plus an infinitive is how you describe a custom rather than a one-off: "En mi país solemos hacer una comida enorme con toda la familia." It sounds far more natural than normalmente hacemos.
En mi país solemos hacer una comida enorme con toda la familia.
“In my country we usually have a huge meal with the whole family.”
When to use it: Describing your own tradition
What you’ll hear back: ¿Ah sí? ¿Y qué coméis? (Oh yeah? And what do you eat?)
