Learning English in your own language
Every language on Linguino is taught through English, except English itself. If you are learning English, you can choose the language your teacher explains things in. Simple English stays the default, and it is one of the choices.
The languages you can choose
- Simple English: short sentences and easy words.
- Spanish, Portuguese, French, German and Italian.
- Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Hindi.
- Russian, Turkish, Vietnamese and Indonesian.
How to choose
When you start English, the first question is "Explain things in…". Pick your language from the list. You can change it any time in your notebook (Notebook in your account menu, top right), under "Your teacher". Your choice is saved with your account.
What changes
- Your teacher explains, coaches and helps in your language. The scene itself, the phrases you practice and every example stay in English.
- Phrase cards show the meaning in your language.
- Lessons on your path and in the catalog show their explanations, word meanings and quiz questions in your language. The first time you open a lesson, it takes a few seconds longer while we translate it; after that it opens straight away on the same device. If a translation cannot be made, the lesson opens in simple English.
- Scenes you create yourself are written with their explanations in your language.
- Your Replay explains things in your language.
- Under a teacher message, tap "Show in …" to read it in your language. Nothing is translated unless you ask, so you keep listening to English.
- The placement chat, the "About you" chat and the level check stay conversations in English, and what you get from them is explained in your language.
The website’s own menus and buttons stay in English for now, and the iOS and Android apps do not have this yet. Lessons in other languages do not change: they are always explained in English.
