The lines

Claiming your dish

At a table, the server asks « Vous avez choisi ? » and you answer « Je vais prendre le poulet, s'il vous plaît » — I'll have the chicken. Put any dish name in the middle and the rest never changes.

Je vais prendre le poulet, s'il vous plaît

“I'll have the chicken, please”

When to use it: When the server comes to take your order

What you’ll hear back: Très bien. Et comme boisson ? (Very good. And to drink?)

Asking what is good

When the menu defeats you, ask « Qu'est-ce que vous me conseillez ? » — what do you recommend? French servers answer straight and usually steer you to the day's dish.

Qu'est-ce que vous me conseillez ?

“What do you recommend?”

When to use it: When you cannot decide what to order

What you’ll hear back: Le plat du jour est très bon aujourd'hui. (The dish of the day is very good today.)
