The lines

Saying why you are calling

French service calls open with the reason, not the story: « Bonjour, je vous appelle au sujet de ma facture du mois dernier. » Change what follows « au sujet de » and the same opener fits any call.

Bonjour, je vous appelle au sujet de ma facture du mois dernier.

“Hello, I'm calling about last month's bill.”

When to use it: Your first sentence once a human picks up

What you’ll hear back: Oui, je vous écoute. Vous avez votre numéro de client ? (Yes, go ahead. Do you have your customer number?)

Spelling your name out loud

Nobody catches a foreign name on a bad line, so the French spell with first names: « Je vous épelle : M comme Marcel, A comme Anatole. » Announce « je vous épelle », then go letter by letter.

Je vous épelle : M comme Marcel, A comme Anatole.

“I'll spell it for you: M as in Marcel, A as in Anatole.”

When to use it: When the adviser asks for your surname

What you’ll hear back: D'accord, ne quittez pas, je vérifie. (Okay, hold on, I'm checking.)
