Concede, then counter

“You're right about that, but look, it's not that simple.”

When: When your friend has just made a fair point

The moment

You are at an aperitivo in Trastevere and a friend insists that Roman pizza beats Neapolitan and that city life beats the countryside. You want to concede where he is right, push back on the rest, and keep the whole thing laughing.

B1 · Unit 4 · Culture & conversation

The lines

Concede, then counter

Hand the point over before you take it back: 'Su questo ti do ragione, però guarda che non è così semplice.' The 'guarda che' frames your objection as information rather than an attack.

“You're right about that, but look, it's not that simple.”

When to use it: When your friend has just made a fair point

What you’ll hear back: In che senso? Spiegati. (In what sense? Go on.)

Closing on a laugh

When neither of you is moving, name the deadlock cheerfully: 'Dai, su questo non ci troveremo mai d'accordo!' It says the argument was a game, and Italians usually answer by offering the next round.

“Come on, we'll never agree on this!”

When to use it: Ending a debate that nobody is going to win

What you’ll hear back: Eh no, mai! Comunque il prossimo giro lo offro io. (Ha, never! Anyway, the next round's on me.)

Maybe, but Neapolitan pizza is still on another level.

Mettiamola così: ognuno difende la propria città.

Let's put it this way: everyone defends their own city.

Tip: Buys you a second and reframes the argument on your terms.

I don't entirely agree, but I see where you're coming from.

Tip: 'Del tutto' is the softener: you disagree without closing the door.

Your objective

Disagree with their claim and give a reason, admit one point where they’re right, and keep it friendly.

  • your disagreement
  • a reason for your side
  • a point you concede

Lines that get it done

In the live scene the objective stays on screen, and the Replay afterwards says whether you got it done.
