B1 · Unit 3 · Practical adulting

The lines

Goal first, documents second

Say what you want, then ask what they need from you: 'Vorrei aprire un conto corrente: quali documenti servono?' The verb 'servire' means 'to be needed', so it agrees with the documents, not with you.

Vorrei aprire un conto corrente: quali documenti servono?

“I'd like to open a checking account: what documents do I need?”

When to use it: At the counter, or on the phone with the branch

What you’ll hear back: Servono un documento d'identità, il codice fiscale e una prova di residenza. (You need an ID, your tax code and proof of residence.)

Asking what a term means

Never nod along at bureaucratic vocabulary you do not know: 'Scusi, che cosa vuol dire esattamente canone mensile?' 'Vuol dire' is the everyday spoken way to ask for a definition.

Scusi, che cosa vuol dire esattamente 'canone mensile'?

“Excuse me, what exactly does 'canone mensile' (monthly fee) mean?”

When to use it: Mid-explanation, when a word on the form is unclear

What you’ll hear back: È la spesa fissa che paga ogni mese per il conto. (It is the fixed fee you pay every month for the account.)
