The lines

The low-pressure invitation

The negative ませんか is how invitations are phrased, and でも ("or something") keeps it casual.

“Would you like to go for a meal together sometime?”

When to use it: Making the first invitation

What you’ll hear back: いいですね。 ii desu ne. zehi ikimashō. (Sounds great. Let's definitely go.)

Declining without finishing

Trailing off after あって is the polite refusal; saying 行きません outright lands as blunt.

sumimasen, sono hi wa chotto yotei ga atte…

“Sorry, I already have plans that day…”

When to use it: Turning an invitation down

What you’ll hear back: そうですか。 sō desu ka. zannen desu. (I see. That's a shame.)
