What to say when you miss a train in Japanese
電車が遅れて、乗り換えに間に合いませんでした。

Your shinkansen out of Nagoya is running forty minutes late and you miss your connection. At the ticket window you ask what happened, get onto a later departure, and ask about your money.

Explaining what went wrong
Link cause and result with the て-form: 「電車が遅れて、乗り換えに間に合いませんでした。」 間に合う means to make it in time, so the past negative says you missed it.

When to use it: At the ticket window after a missed connection
What you’ll hear back: では、次の列車にお振り替えいたします。 de wa, tsugi no ressha ni o-furikae itashimasu. (In that case, we will transfer you to the next train.)
Asking to be rebooked
Use 〜に変更してもらえますか to move onto a later departure: 「次の新幹線に変更してもらえますか。」 At an airport counter just swap in 便: 「次の便に変更してもらえますか。」
次の新幹線に変更してもらえますか。
tsugi no shinkansen ni henkō shite moraemasu ka.

When to use it: When you need a seat on a later departure
What you’ll hear back: はい、16時発に変更いたします。 hai, jūroku ji hatsu ni henkō itashimasu. (Yes, I will change you to the 16:00 departure.)
