The lines
Asking why it is late
A Spanish train 'lleva retraso'; it is never 'es tarde'. Opening with '¿Sabe por qué...?' makes you sound curious instead of annoyed.
¿Sabe por qué lleva retraso el tren?
“Do you know why the train is late?”
When to use it: At the information desk when the board changes
What you’ll hear back: Hay una incidencia en la vía, lleva veinte minutos. (There is a problem on the track, it is twenty minutes late.)
Missed it, now fix it
In Spain you report today's mishaps with the present perfect: 'He perdido el enlace.' Follow it immediately with the request, '¿me puede cambiar el billete?', so the agent knows what you want.
He perdido el enlace, ¿me puede cambiar el billete?
“I missed my connection. Could you change my ticket?”
When to use it: At the Renfe customer service desk
What you’ll hear back: Sin problema, le paso al de las seis y media. (No problem, I'll put you on the 6:30 one.)
