How to talk about your goals and plans in Spanish
Estoy aprendiendo español porque me gustaría trabajar en Madrid algún día.
“I'm learning Spanish because I'd like to work in Madrid one day.”
When: Explaining why you are learning

The moment
You are having a coffee after class in Madrid and a Spanish friend asks why you are learning Spanish and where you see yourself in a year. You explain your reasons, your firm plans and the ideas you are still weighing up.
B1 · Unit 1 · Work & study
The lines
Me gustaría + infinitive
The conditional turns raw ambition into something modest and polite: "Estoy aprendiendo español porque me gustaría trabajar en Madrid algún día." Quiero can sound blunt; me gustaría never does.
Estoy aprendiendo español porque me gustaría trabajar en Madrid algún día.
“I'm learning Spanish because I'd like to work in Madrid one day.”
When to use it: Explaining why you are learning
What you’ll hear back: ¡Qué bien! ¿Y en qué sector, si se puede saber? (Nice! In what sector, if I may ask?)
Mi idea es…
For a plan you have actually decided on, mi idea es plus infinitive sounds far more natural than voy a: "Mi idea es mudarme a España el año que viene y buscar trabajo allí."
Mi idea es mudarme a España el año que viene y buscar trabajo allí.
“My plan is to move to Spain next year and look for work there.”
When to use it: Announcing a concrete plan
What you’ll hear back: ¿Ah sí? ¿Y ya tienes algo en mente? (Oh yeah? Have you got something lined up?)
