Choose where your teacher’s language comes from

A language sounds different from place to place. For Spanish, Portuguese, French and English, you can choose which one your teacher speaks.

  • Spanish: Spain (Madrid), Mexico (Mexico City) or Argentina (Buenos Aires).
  • Portuguese: Brazil (São Paulo) or Portugal (Lisbon).
  • French: France (Paris) or Canada (Montréal).
  • English: the United States or the United Kingdom.

Italian, Japanese and Chinese have one choice for now.

How to choose

Open your notebook (Notebook in your account menu, top right) and find "Your teacher". Pick a place for each language. Your choice saves right away, and your next lesson uses it.

What changes

  • Your teacher speaks the way people do there: the words, the accent and the ways of saying "you", like vos in Buenos Aires or vosotros in Madrid.
  • When a phrase from your lesson is said differently there, your teacher shows you the local way once and says what is different. Either way is fine when you answer.
  • A scene set where the language sounds different moves to a similar place in the city you chose.
  • In French, your neighborhood scenes keep their own setting, and your teacher points out how Montréal says things.
  • The daily call and narrate mode use your choice too.

Your choice is saved with your account, so lessons in the iOS and Android apps use it too. The placement chat, the "About you" chat and the level check do not change.
