The daily call, reminders and narrate mode
On the website, the daily call card on your home screen has a Call now button. The call rings and shows who is calling: choose Answer to talk, or Not now to go back home, where the call still waits for you. A call is a friendly chat of up to three minutes in the language you are learning, not a lesson, and you do most of the talking. The Help and "Try that again" buttons work here too, and afterwards your Replay goes over what you said. Calls have no quiz.
Who calls
- In French, someone from your neighborhood, Le 11e, calls in their own voice: the person who remembers the most about you, or Nadia if nobody does yet. They may bring up something they remember, unless memory is paused.
- In the other languages, a friendly regular caller phones you: Lucía in Spanish, Beatriz in Portuguese, Giulia in Italian, Haruka in Japanese, Li Na in Chinese and Emma in English.
Your free call
Your first call each day is free. It does not use practice time, even if you have some, and it does not count as one of your free sessions. The free call comes back 20 hours after your last call that did not use practice time. If a free call does not connect, it stays free for your next try. You can call again the same day: later calls use your practice time, or one of your free sessions if you have none, and still last three minutes at most.
Set a time and get a reminder
- Open Daily call in your account menu (the round button with your initial, top right), or choose "Set a time" on the call card.
- Pick a language, a time and the days you want, then choose "Save my call time". Times are in your own time zone.
- With email reminders on, we email you within 15 minutes after your time, at most once a day, with a link that starts the call. Turn them off on the same page at any time, and the call still waits for you on your home screen.
- To pause your call time and reminders, turn the Daily call switch off and save. To stop them for good, choose "Remove call time".
Narrate mode
Choose Narrate on the call card, or "Narrate what you’re doing" on the Daily call page. Then say out loud what you are doing right now, like cooking, walking or tidying up, in the language you are learning. Your coach gives you the words you are missing and shows them on screen, says your sentence back the right way when you slip, and asks short questions about what you are doing. Narrate mode works like a lesson: it uses your practice time, or a free three-minute session if you have none.
