The shadowing studio: copy the melody
Shadowing means listening to a native speaker and saying the same thing right after, copying their rhythm and melody. Open Shadowing in the top navigation. The studio does not use practice time.
How it works
- Pick a language and a phrase. Signed in, you get phrases from your recent lessons, newest first. Otherwise you get phrases from the start of the path.
- Choose Listen to hear the phrase.
- Hold the record button while you say it, or tap to start and tap again to stop.
- A chart draws the native speaker’s pitch and yours on top of each other, so you can see where your voice should rise and fall. For Chinese it is labeled Tones, and for Japanese, Pitch accent.
Your scores
- Pronunciation: how clearly you said the words.
- Melody match: how close the rise and fall of your voice is to the native line. How high or low your voice is does not matter, only how it moves.
Try again as often as you like. Linguino keeps your best take, and the chart can show your latest take or your best one. Your pitch is measured in your browser. Your recording is sent for the pronunciation score and is not kept.
